How did we ever manage without digital luggage tags?

electronic luggage tag

Paper luggage tags could soon be a thing of the past; travellers can now use their smartphone and digital luggage tags to check in their smart bag from home.

There’s a poignancy about removing the old dog-eared luggage tags that have accumulated on the handles of suitcases, but according to those in the know, they are an outmoded way of tracking luggage that cost passengers time.

At around £1,000 apiece, RIMOWA suitcases can cost as much as some of us spend on an entire holiday and their latest innovation promises to increase the price further still.

In a bid to consign the paper luggage label to history, a digital screen is integrated into the suitcase. From later this year, in addition to a digital boarding pass, certain airlines, including Lufthansa, will also provide passengers with digital luggage data for their booked flights.

Taking your bicycle by plane

There many reasons why you might want to take your own bike by plane on holiday rather than hire one once you get there. Apart from the familiarity of using your own bicycle and avoiding the unnecessary expense, unless your bicycle is worth £500 or less, it’s unlikely it will be covered against theft by a standard travel insurance policy. Annual travel insurance from the ETA covers bikes up o £1,000 as standard.

When you check in your bike as an over-sized item, the airline will give you a receipt for it and assume responsibility for its safekeeping, but rather than have to go through the rigmarole of making a claim for damage from the airline an increasing number of cyclists choose to cover the bike with a specialist cycle insurance policy. The insurer pays out for the damage and then takes it up with the airline themselves.
