With only three weeks left before the end of British Summer Time and the official start of winter cycling, we have another set of lights to give away. The Brightside is a double-ended cycle light focused solely on protecting a cyclist’s blind spot. Mounted to the top tube of the frame or handlebar stem, the powerful LED lights produce a flashing or constant orange light to warn motorists of the cyclist’s position
According to the makers of the Brightside, over 70% of collisions occur at junctions and roundabouts, the light completes the all-round visibility that we all need as road users. This currently overlooked aspect will keep cyclists much more visible when their other lights aren’t facing the motorist.
When we asked 800 cyclists to name their least favourite aspect of life on two wheels, 52% named ‘cars and lorries passing too close’ as their number one complaint. Sideways-facing lights can only help encourage drivers to leave adequate room when overtaking.
Win a Brightside side light
The Brightside sideways lights sell for £29.99, but we have a set to give away. Simple leave a comment at the bottom of the page to enter the draw. We’ll pick a name and send you the light in time for the official start of winter cycling.
Winter cycling: Look on the bright side
There’s never been a better time to buy a good set of bicycle lights. The advent of LED technology has resulted has revolutionised cycle lighting. Cheap, robust and bright, the lights are being used in ever-more creative ways. LEDs can now be found incorporated into gloves, jackets and now embedded into bicycle wheel rims.
Bicycle lights are brighter than ever before. The most powerful LED, Xenon strobe and high-intensity discharge (HID) bicycle lights are more powerful than a standard car headlamp, but for less than £10 you can buy a light that’s more than powerful enough for urban commuting. The best value rear light we’ve come across this year is the Cree LED, which retails for a very reasonable £7.99 from the Wilkinson website. If you team two of these rear lights, you get an effect comparable with set-ups costing ten times as much.

I’d like one.
Iain Taylor
Great idea, I am frequently ‘skimmed’ by cars passing too close despite riding assertively.
andy wildman
Yes please
Al Napp
Brightside, burning like fire
Brightside, lighting me up sideways
How can a light that burns so brightly
mean you fail to see me?
Brightside
Stuart lamb
Really good product to keep you safe when pulling out at junctions on dark winter nights
A.waite
Another good idea to try and keep us safe.
Always look on the brightside of life.
Jess Walsh-Banks
I love one too please x

An hour on the bikes each day to school and back across central Bristol (half hour each way) with a six year old and a nine year old, defo lights are crucial as the nights draw in. Haven’t seen side lights before, but defo look like something to check out. Thanks for en-light-ening us 😉
Dick Willis
Excellent (having been knocked off due to a sideways collision)
Jamie J
effective and reflective..?
Trevor Brock
A flash of genius !
Terry Riley
If I was approaching the bike shown in the video I would assume that it was indicating to make a right turn when in fact it turned left. It would be more appropriate if the orange light was a solid and not a flashing one.
Jan Heatley
A Brightside shining alongside the curbside will stop me falling on my backside!
Jim
Illuminating article
Leon Moore
Lit-up like a Christmas tree, how can a driver fail to see you and me?
Diane
Twinkle twinkle brightside star.
How I see you near and far.
Alan Donnelly
Brightside, Brightside, burning bright
As I pedal home at night –
Could inattentive motorist’s eye
E’er miss your radiant symmetry?
TD
Dare drivers to continue to say they don’t see me if I had a Brightside.
Dario
I’m not M1r. Brightside but I’d love to win one of your competitions 🙂
Roger Wortley
This could be a game-changer.
Joe
Bright idea!
James Booth
Smart idea, anything to bring more awareness to bicycles whilst on the busy roads!
I would very much like one please!
🙏🏼🚴🏼♀️🚨
Nuno
Brilliant idea, being seen on turns is one of my main concerns when cycling, especially at night, these lights look like they can really help on that.
Rory Harkins
Interesting idea, wonder if it works in practice?
Graham Parkhurst
Good idea but could be confusing if on flash mode as it will seem to be a turning indicator when exiting from a side road.
Mark B
I’d love these please.
Edward Breeveld
Small and neat; a good idea but a bit pricey
Pat
If I don’t win one I’ll definitely buy one.
Doug Milsom
An ingenious addition to our safety armoury. I would like to own one!
Joel Halligan
Another bright idea.
Astra
Yes my commute will soon be on unlit roads so these would be good.
Andy D’Agorne
Great idea and reasonable price. Would be more useful if an ‘all in one front/ side light could be produced rather yet another light. Think the forward projected cycle symbol light is more of an innovation though
Maurice Hopper
This would be a great way of further confusing drivers. Having three wheels on my trike and two back lights is often enough but with his bright idea I would have side lights as well. Brilliant!
Ruth
These are a great idea. I’d love to use them.
Lisa Taylor
Would really love this to stay safer
Margaret
Brightside on your side increases your safety on a night ride.
Hilary Watson
I’d love one of these – then I’ll have reached true enlightenment.
christina
Great idea to help us keep safe…
Countryman
One of these will help my son regain confidence after a car knocked him off his bike in London.
Pete Gateley
Good idea. I should like one to make me noticeable .
Darren C
Count me in, just one question though, has anyone ever won one of these competitions?, I can never find the names of the winners (after entering everything for a number of years!!)
JMW
Great idea. They look really effective from the video.
Steve Pilsworth
Looking on the Bright side, this is simply an illuminating idea.
Helen Banos Smith
We would love one! I carry two children on my bike and the more visible we are the better!
Laurence Koster
What an interesting idea. I’d like to win one.
Ned
nice idea…
Marc Thompson
I would light one please 🙂
ukvegan
Anything that makes you more visible at night is helpful
Tim Allen
If I don’t win I will probably have to buy some….winning would be better though.
Alastair Dent
I want one for Kajsa Tylen, currently riding in the UK and trying to set the Guinness Record for the furthest distance ridden by a woman in a year.
TheCyclist
Be so good for motorists – and pedestrians – to see me at night from the side on, too.
Ana
yes, please! I don’t like them overtaking so close anymore!
Minimur
Lights are absolutely essential and this covers the blind spot especially when exiting from a side road.
Caroline Roques
Great idea. Am often tempted to light my spokes ad everything else up like Blackpool Illuminations but slightly worried other cyclists will think I’m either mad or a child!! I’d love to win a Brightside light, and would sport it with pride!
Iain Shanks
This is just what I need for increasing visibility on my commute
