While his ultimate dream might be to launch an electric equivalent to the Ford Model T, Elon Musk understands that it makes financial sense to fund research and development by selling low-volume, high performance cars to early adopters. Perhaps just as importantly, Musk is building a powerful brand – skilfully navigating the seeming dichotomies of being an environmentally friendly manufacturer of ridiculously fast cars and applying relatively conservative styling to cutting edge technology.
Jay Giraud is plotting a similar course with his company Damon Motorcycles. His HyperSports bikes wouldn’t look out of place in a line-up of the latest from the big four or Ducati and their performance is just as mind-blowing – and in most situations impractical. However, Damon Motorcycles boast a few innovations that could disrupt the motorcycle industry forever.
In this interview, posted on Youtube last week, Giraud expands on these groundbreaking features.
A riding position for every road
No more cramped legs or aching wrists – at the touch of a button, Damon Motorcycles transform instantly between sport and commuter positions while in motion. With a maximum range of 200 miles this feature is especially welcome, but it promises the added benefit of improved visibility in urban environments.
Eyes in the back of your head
The bike is equipped with cameras that scan the road around & alerts you to potential danger through haptic feedback on the handlebars, integrated windscreen LEDs, always-on 1080p front & rear-view cameras and long range radar.
Back-up power for your home
Vehicle-to-Home connectivity means you have days of backup power at the ready. All Damon motorcycles are capable of inverting up to 6.6 kW into the home should you need it.
Future electric motorcycles
Like car makers, motorcycle manufacturers are painfully aware of the writing on the wall for the internal combustion engine. Although commuters in Britain seem reluctant to swap cars for powered two-wheelers, congestion and air pollution look set to worsen and electric motorcycles and scooters promise to be cheaper and easier to charge than their four-wheel equivalents. In terms of charging infrastructure, electric scooters can be small and light enough to store and charge inside a house itself.
