The Brainy Bike Light claims to play on the way our brains react to instantly recognisable symbols – the design uses an illuminated bike symbol to stand out from urban light clutter.
The light was developed with the help of a specialist in behavioural economics, who found a bike symbol was more quickly recognised by other road users than conventional bike lights. Professor Charles Spence at the University of Oxford says of the Brainy Bike Light “The use of a highly recognisable symbol, one that is deeply imbued with meaning, constitutes an extremely clever and effective means of creating greater awareness and faster reactions from drivers of other vehicles.”

Protection for you and your bike
A true test of a cycle insurance company is what happens when you make a claim – it’s why we don’t farm out the process to a third party like other providers. Your claim is dealt with by one of us here and you’re always welcome to call us directly. It’s also the reason we will never devalue your bicycle, no matter how old it is.
We don’t claim to be the cheapest cover on the market, but should you ever need to make a claim, you’ll understand why we consider ourselves to be the best. After all, we are judged by The Good Shopping Guide to be Britain’s most ethical provider.
Stephen
Interesting idea, I’d love to give a set a thorough test on my daily commute.
DarrenC
Definitely worth a try, not for the aero conscious cyclist though!
Lance
These look great.
Matthew Newell
Anything that might help – to be honest I think far fewer people don’t see bikes than we think and far more drivers just don’t care. “Sorry mate I didn’t see you” is code for ‘I couldn’t be bothered to look properly, also I think my need to rush is more important than your right to safety, and a dose of Bloody Cyclists” Sorry to sound cynical.
Alan Jones
This does make sense, especially as the brighter we’ve made bike lights the more like cars they look.
Rebecca Nestor
This is clever and engaging, I’d love to have a set!
Steve
Gives the term ‘bike light’ a whole new meaning!
Peter Clark
Could hope for a few brainier drivers but these would be a good start thanks!
Mike Croker
Worth a try – happy to oblige!
Alex McMorran
This would be great for the commute once the West End reopens!
Keith
Yes please. Lighten my darkness.
Frank
“What I’m gonna ask you to do will sound crazy, but I have a hunch it’ll work…Just trust Mr. Hackenbacker.” (see Thunderbirds – Alias Mr. Hackenbacker)
Mark B
Great idea. I’m sure they’re more brainy than a lot of the car drivers out there!
Phil
Such a shame that to be seen amid the clutter we have to add our own. I’d like to see a reduction in signage and lighting generally, following Hans Monderman’s advice which has been taken in hundreds of European towns.
Les Gunbie
Smart idea! Yes please.
James Booth
That would be really useful whilst riding around London at night!
Bryn Gwyndaf Jones
Brainy is what we need with today’s clutter on the roads.
Well done!
Annette
I can see how they would make other road users look twice or sub-consciously ‘ think bike’. I’d love to give them a try.
Carol W
It’s a no-brainer 🙂
Jon Vamplew
There is no business like show business “Riding along on my push bike honey” would look great with a pair of those brainy lights.
Ema
Mmmmm different from every other light 🙂
Jill
Interesting
Pamela
Oh yew, would be so useful for my daughter’s daily commute
Bill
A ‘no-brainer’ !…Who wouldn’t want a set of these on their bike?
wesley
Eek, watch out for that tiny person on a bike!
Jamie J
Am unconvinced. Either those pictures don’t do the lights justice or that specialist in behavioural economist had led them up the garden path…
Derek
What a great idea. Would be great to use while cycling through the city when lots of pedestrians are about.
Gavin
Useful.
David Gray
Love to see more data on this in the future.
Peter Chisnall
Illuminating!
Chris Wrigley
I cycle a lot in the dark – these would be great
Steve Green
What a brilliant idea!

Will drivers take more notice, will they make you more visible? It would be good to try a set and find out.
Anita Brayford
Brilliant idea to use the bike symbol – definitely a safety plus
Su
What a great way to stand out from the crowd!
Yasmin Gregory
If it can help at least one cyclist feel safer on their urban commute then that’s research and money well spent.
Helen
What a clever idea. Would love it if they really do create faster reactions from other road users.
Philip Benson
Brainy bike lights – great idea

I would love a set of these to give to my daughter who does food deliveries for Ecoeats in Scotland
