Cold weather cycling
This week’s commute might feel cold, but it’s always a question of context. The pioneer adventure cyclists of the 1890s who took to the snowy wilds of northern Canada without the benefit of modern clothing (and 80 years before mountain bikes) knew a thing or two about cycling in the extreme cold. The Great Gold Rush drew 100,000 prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in north-western Canada between 1896 and 1899. Those who didn’t have the money to invest in dog teams used bicycles and rudimentary cold weather gear.
Max Hirschberg was 19 when he took to a bicycle to join the gold rush. His journal gives a fascinating insight into the cold weather gear of the day:
“The day I left Dawson, March 2, 1900, was clear and crisp, 30° below zero. I was dressed in a flannel shirt, heavy fleece-lined overalls, a heavy mackinaw coat, a drill parka, two pairs of heavy woolen socks and felt high-top shoes, a fur cap that I pulled down over my ears, a fur nose piece, plus fur gauntlet gloves. On the handlebars of the bicycle I strapped a large fur robe. Fastened to the springs, back of the seat, was a canvas sack containing a heavy shirt, socks, underwear, a diary in waterproof covering, pencils and several blocks of sulfur matches.”

Vincent
What would I fill it with? Soup, vegetable of course, or maybe coffee for a boost of caffeine. Tea maybe or perhaps just hot water, so I could make a brew, either coffee or tea, fresh. Yes that’s it hot water so I would be able to make a fresh brew.
Karen Vogelsang
Latte with a double shot 😁
Lindy Williams
If I were out cycling on a day like today I would fill a Stanley flask with Suma hot apple and blackcurrant cordial.
It would provide a few calories as well as topping up fluid levels.
And it is delicious!
(I do not have any connections with Suma foods).
Lisa

This time of year drinking water keeps cool on its own so, Thermos being a brand that’s sure to keep things hot, I’d fill it with hot chocolate to warm the cockles of my heart or smooth warming soup, depending how much frost on the ground. It would be great for winter commuting too.
Steve K
In Summer it would definitely be used for water.
In cold weather it would probably just be used for tea or coffee, but it might also be used for soup – depending on the top of the flask and ease of cleaning.
Huw
In the absence of a fur cap and fur nose piece would welcome the thermos filled with coffee. Would miss out rum if cycling.
Clive Durdle

I would fill the bicycle thermos with water at 80 degrees Celsius (176 F), the ideal temperature for some green teas and also for mate, a South American drink. After cycling with my wife to my favourite bakery to grab a few pastries, we would take our treats and bicycle thermos to the nearest park and have a great quality time outdoors.

Autumn was my favourite season back in the States and with it came hot spiced cider. Here, I simmer cloudy apple juice with a cinnamon stick, cloves, and an allspice berry. Tastes and smells like autumn and is even better when you drink it outside.
Malcolm
I’d fill it with my wife’s home made soup
Bryn Gwyndaf Jones
How cool! Why haven’t I seen one before.
Marcos G. Dominguez
I would fill my bicycle thermos with water at 80 degrees Celsius, the ideal temperature to drink some green teas, as well as mate (a South American drink). I would cycle with my wife to our favourite bakery and grab a few pastries. We would then take our treats and bicycle thermos to a park, to have a quality time outdoors, drinking hot green tea or mate.

I live in a cold and breezy Scotland, the Stanley Thermos will help warm me when the temperature chills me to the bone!
MARK A SEVERS
I would fill the thermos with either lovely hot freshly-brewed coffee out of my standard filter machine, or even better, hot chocolate made with “Sweet Freedom” brand chocolate syrup, which can be added to any heated milk or milk substitute (I use rice milk).
On a cold winter ride, be it to work, to the shops or just for a ride for the fun of it, the promise of a lovely hot choc drink at any time gives a warming feeling even before I take the first sip. The ability to fit this comforting promise right into a bottle cage for easy access would be such a great boon..
Sean Murphy

The bike tends to stay inside a lot of the time in cold weather, perhaps the thought of a hot drink will entice it (me) out more often and this looks as though its just the job to do that.
