Taking a mountain bike to a truly remote area and cycling in solitude is a fantastic experience that should be on every rider’s bucket list, but for those worried by the prospect of crashing and being unable to phone for help comes the Ridersmate – an autonomous SOS GPS beacon.
The Ridersmate attaches to your bike and a detachable jack plug tethers to your belt loop or clothing.
The device constantly tracks your location, speed, heading and altitude, texting your designated contact should you become separated from your bike. If you fall off, an emergency message is sent automatically to your chosen contacts. To cancel the response, you can reattach the jack plug to the unit.
Why not just use an app?
GPS and map functions drain smartphone batteries quickly because they search for and receive a signal from three different satellites in order to traingulate a position– a task that uses lots of power. Ridersmate worlks independently of your phone and its own battery provides protection for eight hours’ riding.
Ridersmate can be pre-ordered for £199 via Kickstarter. For more information visit the Ridersmate website.
Protection for mountains bikers
Cycle insurance from the ETA includes cover for race events such as triathlon, time trials, downhill mountain biking, sportives and other competitive cycling both in Britain and abroad. Includes accidental damage while in competition or training. No additional cost is made for race cover, but certain exclusions apply.
One simple policy
For over twenty years we have been providing straightforward, affordable bicycle insurance. Whether you use your bike to commute, shop, race or amble in the park, ETA cycle insurance has you covered.
Many cycle insurers offer very limited cover, charging extra for features we believe should come as standard – such as third party cover, personal accident or extension of your cover to family and friends. ETA Cycle Insurance provides one fully-comprehensive package for total peace of mind, whatever your cycling needs.
