Stop Killing Our Children – The film

We’ve done it. With a day to spare, and thanks to the generosity of over 200 supporters, we’ve raised a little over £10,000 to make a short film about road danger.

Road danger in Britain not only kills and injures over 16,000 kids every year, but its air pollution poisons millions more. STOP KILLING OUR CHILDREN will put a spotlight on the institutionalised apathy towards road deaths that sees 24,000 people  killed or seriously injured every year on British roads. We’ve spent the last 70 years making driving convenient and life inconvenient. Our love affair with the car has come at a cruel cost…

Together we change the world

In the early 1970s, a Dutch TV documentary highlighted how cars were severely hampering their children’s lives. It galvanised public opinion and helped fuel a people-powered movement that transformed the country – their policies on road danger reduction are now the envy of the world.

We know what it takes to build healthy and safe cities; there’s an abundance of wisdom and experience out there. The reason we tolerate the child deaths, air pollution and huge financial burden caused by motorised traffic isn’t a lack of knowledge – it’s a shameful lack of political will.

A rational approach to road danger reduction isn’t just about stopping the death of children, it’s about helping them to thrive. Odense is the third-largest city in Denmark and yet 81% of children ride to school, generally without their parents. Here in Britain, it’s less than 2%.

STOP KILLING OUR CHILDREN – the film

The subject of road danger reduction is broad, but we will focus specifically on the experience of children – particularly as this was what made the Dutch documentary in the early 1970s so effective.

Most importantly, we want our film to show that a systematic approach to road danger reduction is to the benefit of all – whatever their age and however they travel.

In the same way that public opinion has forced politicians to get tough on plastic pollution, our film will demand that we stop killing our children on the roads.
