Noise cameras to join speed camera on British roads

Roadside microphones and cameras are to detect illegal, excessively noisy vehicles under plans announced this week by the Department for Transport. The noise cameras will work like speed cameras to target law-breaking drivers automatically. Trials are to take place at several locations over the coming months.

Research commissioned by the Department for Transport, found that a noise camera system could help tackle extremely noisy vehicles which breach legal noise limits. It could also help to catch those who rev car or motorcycles engines beyond legal limits, making life a misery for those who live close by.

Noise pollution has a detrimental effect on our health and our general quality of life and yet there is no threshold limit for road traffic noise in the European Union.

People who live in areas affected by high levels of road traffic noise may be more likely to suffer heart attacks than people in quieter areas, according to a study of 1,500 people in Stockholm.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute looked at people who had suffered a heart attack and once they had eliminated those with hearing impairments and those exposed to other sources of noise they found levels of traffic noise above 50 decibels increased the risk of heart attack by 40 per cent.

Noise pollution is a serious and under-reported environmental problem. According to the World Health Organisation, 40 per cent of Europeans are regularly exposed to road traffic noise exceeding 55 decibels. In Sweden, it is illegal for noise levels to exceed 55 decibels at the front of a building.

The title of the Swedish study is Traffic Noise and Risk of Myocardial Infarction and it is published in full at www.epidem.com

Environmentally friendly breakdown cover

Not all breakdown companies are the same. Established over 29 years ago, and with over 5,000 recovery trucks on call 24/7, we have a proven track record of providing efficient, reliable breakdown cover. We have been voted by the Good Shopping Guide to provide the most ethical insurance in Britain.

We handpick only the best local mechanics and garages around Britain to send out if you break down. We believe this way of working is efficient, environmentally friendly and helps supports local communities and economies, too.

On top of this, we offset the carbon emissions of the recovery trucks that go out to assist you, reducing the impact your breakdown has on our environment. Every breakdown policy you buy helps fund the work of our charity, the ETA Trust, which campaigns for a safer, cleaner transport future.

If you are driving to continental Europe this summer, why not get a quote for our Euro breakdown cover…

Speaking as an Acoustical Engineer this is not before time.

I just wonder how they would set the limit. Some vehicles – e.g. old motorcycles were relatively noisy as standard. But I agree that there are far too many modified recent vehicles, both cars and bikes, that are unreasonably loud.

At last! You choose what you think is a quiet location to live and some inconsiderate fool roars around the neighbourhood presumably trying to make up for whatever inadequacy they’re living with, at the expense of everyone else. I suppose the government will be accused of acting like a ‘Nanny State’ but clearly the Police don’t have the resources to deal with this issue so this is a great idea. And like speed cameras, yes we can all make mistakes e.g. miss a speed limit sign, but the safe and considerate driver has nothing to fear.

These are absolutely useless for catching motorcycles with straight through exhausts like the Harley Davidsons that plague the A25 in Surrey. Some of the worst offenders, some of them are so loud they can set off car alarms! They need to have the ANPR looking at the BACK of the vehicles, motorcycles don’t have front number plates!

This is a rubbish idea. I rev my bike when i see a dumbass in a cage on the mobile phone and my life is in danger. In fact i will continue to do so until the coppers become proactive in dealing with that problem. Just another stealth tax thought up as a job retention exercise.
