The third Sunday in November was introduced as a Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims by RoadPeace in 1993 and adopted by the United Nations in 2005 as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. It is now recognised internationally as a World Day of Remembrance for all those affected by road crashes and is included in the Global Plan for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, launched in May 2011.
Road crashes are a leading cause of death to the young and healthy. Every day in the UK, five people a day are killed in crashes. During 2018, this included 112 people in London, with 3,949 people suffering serious injuries.
On this important day, bereaved families and the seriously injured come together to acknowledge the terrible toll of road deaths and injuries and to show our thanks for the work of the emergency services. The service will include music, poetry, readings and a dedication to crash victims, followed by refreshments.
