The idea of wearing a bicycle lock around the waist or across the shoulder isn’t new; bike couriers have been doing it with heavyweight chain locks for years, but the Hiplok is the world’s first bicycle lock developed specifically to be worn on the body.
The principle of carrying a lock independently is sound; there’s no need to take a bag with you and you transfer the weight of the lock from your back and shoulders to your hips, which makes your riding more stable and comfortable. At 2.2 KG the lock isn’t light, but it has the maximum security rating of gold.
We have a gold-rated Hiplok worth £85 to giveaway. Simply leave us a comment at the bottom of the page and we’ll pick a name out for the hat next week.
Ethical cycle insurance
On the face of it, one cycle insurance policy is much like another, but the devil is the detail. Check your small print for so-called ‘new-for-old’ replacement – many insurers use the term, but if your bicycle is more than a few years old, devalue it severely. This means you are left out of pocket when you come to replace it.
With ETA cycle insurance, however old the bike, if it’s stolen you get enough to buy a new model. Furthermore, every cycle insurance policy you buy from us helps support the work of the ETA Trust, our charity campaigning for a cleaner, safer transport future. Little wonder The Good Shopping Guide judges us to be Britain’s most ethical provider.

Hiplock, it won’t lock your hips.
Darren C
That lock is worth more than my bike! But very soon I hope to be getting a new bike, so would be very handy indeed by next week.
Thank you!
Neil Woolford
Very rugged and manly look, if you like that kind of thing…

That’s hip!
Jim Woodlingfield
An excellent idea, I’ve had to take the rack off my bike to add a tag-along so this would help with locking up the bikes on days out.
Rebecca Nestor
This looks really good – I’d love one!
Tommy Knowland
Well I was looking for a new belt
robert p Griffiths-garrod
I need a new lock for a new bike and this will do nicely especially as i’m suffering cashflow problems (more going out than coming in 🙂 )
Sarah
Looks really great.
Andrew Smith
Hip, hip, hooray!
Stuart Young
I could be hip with the cool kids
CraigSA
Interesting idea. There isn’t always room on the bike to fit a lock so end up needing to carry it in a bag. This could mean no bag needed
Bryn Gwyndaf Jones
Absolutely brilliant!
Richard
Summer holiday looms, children out of school and on their bikes – they might remember to lock them up if they are wearing one of these.
Peter Clark
What a belting prize to win!
John thys
Brilliant idea
Robert
Hmmmm…..
Not sure about “first bicycle lock developed specifically to be worn on the body.”
I’ve had a Litelok since early 2019, and although it comes with velcro straps that can be used to fix it to the frame, it was certainly advertised as being easily worn around the waist, which is far more convenient.
The one I got via Kickstarter is/was SoldSecure “silver”, and more than once I’ve been out in the evening and literally forgotten I’ve got it on: I’ve only remembered at the bedroom door after I’ve been pottering round the house for many minutes…
The ETA
Hi Robert, The Hiplok design is 10 years old
Ewan Cushan
Great looking lock. Just the thing!
D Woodman
This looks great
Inge
I’ve got the perfect trousers for this belt! Thank you!
Vincent Procter
Has long as it’s not gold, it would definitely get stolen then. And I like my bike.
Jim Jump
Looks like a perfect solution to leaving home and forgetting your bike lock.
Steve K
The height of fashion!
Hilary
Ooh looks ace and will prevent the kind of whiplash delivered when attempting to wrestle a stiffer lock into a small enough circle to secure to a bike rack!
Jennie
This is great!
Rory Harkins
Nice idea. Probably take some getting used to an extra 2kg round the waist.
Steve
£85? Need another lock to secure that one!

Do not leave my bike anywhere but a Gold Lock would give the choice…can lock in garage too! Be awfully kind of you🙂
Richard Souster
Nice and chunky, could wear it out training on a light weight bike 🤔
Derek
Living in Cambridge, a gold rated bicycle lock is essential. Gold plated would be even better!

Anna Green
I’d love one of these – much easier to carry than having to put a heavy lock in a pannier.
Phil
Hope I get locky
David Gray
I suppose for small people it could be worn like a bandolier.
Sam Fleming
Would love to win this. Safe bike and I get to pretend to be Batman as well!

One of those ideas which are brilliant and simple. Security with comfort.
Helen
I love the idea of this. No more clunky locks hanging off my bike.

Brian
Hip, hip, hooray!
GARY MARTIN
Between us, my wife and I own four hybrid bicycles, two of which I am hoping to convert to electrically assisted bikes in the next few months (when our Swytch kits arrive). ETA insurance sounds like the perfect reassurance although, and I don’t want to tempt fate, to date I have never lost any of my bicycles to a thief. I intend keeping my record and a lock like this Hiplock would go some way to assist me in that quest.
Kevin Morris
Locks( looks) great.what else is there to say.
Kevin Griffiths
Perfect for those town stops ensuring the bike will still be there on return.
Gordon May
Yes please
Maurice Flavell
As a person who rides as a camper I am always looking to reduce the amount I carry, my lock takes up a bit of room in my panniers so this will help in reducing the amount I will have to carry
Andy Brown
In the spirit of Huey, I’d like to make the News wearing one of these, Hiplok’d to be Secure
PeteG
This must be the best way of protecting our pride and joy.
Jane Collier
Such a useful and sensible solution to the problem of wear to put your lock whilst travelling. Much more immediately accessible than in a backpack. Great idea.
Mike Croker
Wot no braces?
Alan Jones
All the attraction, the tension, don’t you see this is perfection?
Chris Matheson
This would be an absolute boon. Makes security that much easier.
Matthew Newell
Much easier to use and carry than the enormous d-lock I presently carry around
wesley
Great, as long as you don’t lose the key while you are wearing it!
Joe Norman
The wearable lock sounds a great idea. My current lock fills one of my panniers, which is a right nuisance.
Sarah
What a golden opportunity.
Damian Connaughton
Would love one of these for my commuting bike!
Clive Jones
Had a nice bike stolen out of my garage last month. Police tried to victim shame me saying I should have used a tougher lock. Could do with one of these.
Ann
A great idea.
Chris Grover
I’d love to win this! I insure my bike with you and if I won it, surely it would be harder to nick, so a win-win!
Rowland Thomas
Indispensable
Michael Davis
This will be ideal for keeping my Himiway ebike safe & secure.
Joanne Beale
Just about to start commuting and need to upgrade my lock to leave my bike at the station!

Jamie J
Belting news…
Keith
Looks great, easy to carry, very convenient.
Stephen
A BELTING great design!!
Mark
Hope this would make me look like a 50 year old hipster! 🙂
Paul Hubert
Hmm, I’m just looking at the black mark on my sleeve from carrying my bike for repair to Saltaire Cycles. A lock like this would conceivably be a way of transferring dirt from the frame and bike racks etc onto one’s clothing. I’m not convinced that’s a good thing, although a lock round your waist would obviate the problem of either the fittings that come with a lock to fix it to the frame or finding other ways to carry it. Is there any research to show how riders deal with this with a Hiplok or similar?
David Farmer
Is it compatible with the belt loops on a pair of 501s?
Bill
Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way (twice!) that flimsy bike locks are next to useless…Ouch. (As far as I’m concerned, that’s the worst thing about cycling in London and having to leave your bike unattended for any length of time.)
Laurie Johnston
I want
Chris Bromwich
Looks pretty amazing, better than my rusty old chain and padlock. Wouldn’t like to wear that around my waist 🙁
Kris
This would be perfect for when my new bike arrives 😀
Iain Shanks
Great idea. Would be very convenient
